Racing towards a cure
With the highest rates of breast cancer in the United States, residents of the Pacific Northwest share a particular sense of urgency about finding a cure. On September 20, thousands gathered in Portland for the 18th annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure—the largest Race for the Cure event on the West Coast.
More than 43,000 runners, walkers and volunteers participated in the Race, helping to fund life saving research grant programs. Seventy-five percent of the net proceeds from this year’s race will fund local breast cancer screenings, health education projects and treatment. The Race also seeks to raise awareness about the importance of early detection and features special events and activities for breast cancer survivors.
